9 Best Natural Beauty Recipes (DIY Hair and Skincare)
In today’s post I am going to share with you 9 of the best natural beauty recipes which are not only healthier options. But are also much more affordable and some work even better than store bought.
I have to tell you, I was very skeptical about making my own beauty products as a woman heading into my 40’s. As a teen I had cut many natural remedy recipes from magazines to try on a Friday night. The avocado homemade face masks, mayo hair treatments and loads of other homemade cosmetic recipes. Sure, those all work fine for teenage skin and hair. I mean are we really needing much at that age aside from trying to prevent a breakout here and there?
As a woman with skin that is maturing, it is a whole other animal. I also don’t want to put chemicals on my body just for the sake of youth. But the best thing about these natural beauty recipes is this. You don’t have to sacrifice good skin care OR your health in the name of it. It is possible to have the best of both worlds with these natural alternatives, which makes me excited to share them with you. I have chosen 9 of my most frequently used and most effective DIY beauty recipes for this post that will cover your beauty needs quite literally from head to toe.
Why Use Natural DIY Products?
I started out using coconut oil in my hair and quickly progressed into my own natural beauty recipes with items that I began keeping on hand. When you make your own beauty products or even natural cleaning products, you have in your arsenal a supply on demand situation. The ability to whip up a mask or refill your stock of lotion or dry shampoo quickly is liberating. Gone are the days of running out and waiting on the ups man to deliver your supply. Or worse, waiting for a paycheck so that you can afford that run to Sephora.
Using natural products reduces packaging, is more sustainable and is better for the environment.
But side from convenience and the environment, using natural beauty products is about quality control. Not only are you able to know exactly what you are putting on your body but you are in the driver seat for their quality. No more chemicals you can’t read, or fear of them entering your blood stream. Just good natural products that have been used for centuries.
Lastly, and this might sound corny. But taking the time to be aware and to make better choices in our beauty products for the sake of health and wellness is the ultimate form of self care.
These Natural Beauty Recipes Are…
- Made with simple ingredients that are better for the environment and are non toxic.
- Are great for almost any skin type or hair type you may have.

Natural Skincare
The world of natural skincare is a treasure trove of tried and true remedies, natural products and amazing concoctions that can not only provide adequate skincare solutions but even deliver far superior results over store bought. Don’t believe me? Well then, you simply must try a few of my favorites I have selected for this vary post.
Exfoliation
Let’s start with the basics. Exfoliation is something that we all need to be doing whether we use natural skincare products or the alternative. The good news is that we don’t need a fancy spa treatment in order to do this properly. In fact, this recipe is not only effective but works for your entire body. The best part is, it costs very little to make and it works!
Let me also say, at home pedicures are a breeze using it since the granules lift off the dead skin cells quite effectively. Don’t forget about the skin on your lips, either of these exfoliating scrubs will work well as a homemade lip scrub.
#1 Grapefruit Scrub
This is an invigorating scrub that can be used from head to toe. It has a long shelf life and is fairly inexpensive to make. If using on more delicate skin, like the face and chest, make sure to rub lightly in a circular motion. When using on the feet, you can scrub more vigorously to remove the dry skin from heels or bottoms of the feet.
#2 Homemade Sugar Scrub
This recipe is so simple to make with just two ingredients! It works wonderfully to help exfoliate the dry dead skin on your body while leaving it soft and silky.
Moisturize
For most of us, it’s understood that moisturizing is an important element in a good skin care routine. But finding the right moisturizer and limiting the amount of different ones is something that most of us struggle with. There are so many moisturizers that are designated for different areas of the body it can be hard to choose the right one. Especially for aging skin or if you have oily or dry skin. Understanding the elements and qualities of natural ingredients is super helpful when making your own.
Items like olive oil, vitamin e, shea butter, argon oil or even cocoa butter are simple ingredients that are amazing to add to body lotions and homemade face cream. Using the key ingredients for your skin needs allows you to customize your own products. The moisturizers I have included in this section are for hair care, body skin and for the facial area.
#3 Homemade Hair Mask
This all natural hair mask is deep conditioning and takes only three simple ingredients to make. Use for an at home beauty night weekly and keep your tresses nicely conditioned, the natural way.
#4 Lavender Oil

#6 Whipped Tallow Body Butter
This whipped tallow body butter recipe will wow you with its creamy smooth texture and unbeatable moisturizing qualities. Whipping up a batch is simple and straight forward.
#7 Natural Lotion Bars
These bars store well wrapped in parchment paper or similar and last a while. They can be used from head to toe and are a nice way to moisturize the body after a shower.
Wash
It goes without saying, washing make up off before bed is a must and washing with a gentle cleanser is suggested. However, I found a much better and natural way to wash my face with oil washing. A concept you might be familiar with. I will share my entire natural skincare routine here. For those of you who I may have lost, oil washing is when you use an oil, like lets say coconut oil to wash the face. To do so, you massage into the face in a circular motion and rinse with warm water. Or in my case, I like to use a warm microfiber cloth to wipe my face clean.
The nice thing is you can rub the mascara off with the oil and get the face clean all in one step. Instead of removing the make up and then washing. Other oils you can use are olive oil, jojoba oil, argon oil, grapeseed oil, sunflower oil, or almond oil.
Benefits of Oil Washing
There are many benefits to oil washing. First, it is cost effective since you don’t have to buy any extra cleaners or products and only a small amount is needed for each wash. A jar coconut oil can last for months and be added to a wide array of other natural beauty recipes. It is also great for most skin types as the oil helps pull the dirt and grime off the skin while leaving the good bacteria the skin needs. Many cleaners strip the skin of both. Lastly, it is easy to do! Oil washing removes makeup and grime resulting in less need of a make up remover.
Natural Hair Care
Finding only natural hair care products can be a bit of a challenge however, I have been able to get great success out of using a natural hair mask for dry hair and a fantastic simple recipe for dry shampoo that is in powder form. I swear by both of them.
These two natural beauty recipes have been a great addition to my hair care routine and have helped me reduce the amount of chemicals I use on my hair. Not to mention, eliminated my need to purchase these products. If wanting to make your own shampoo, I found this great recipe to try.
