Friday Homemaking: Getting Ready For The Weekend
Set the tone for the weekend with Friday homemaking as it is all about getting ready for the weekend and giving ourselves the ability to relax.
Psst. I have a secret to tell you. How you spend your homemaking week will determine your weekend result. What do I mean by this? Well, keeping a home takes consistent effort and whether you work outside the home or not. You likely have some dishes to wash, clothes to fold, or a dinner to make as we speak.
If we spend our days not including the upkeep of our spaces or ensuring that we have meals planned or groceries in the cupboards, it could very well mean that the weekend will be a time to play catch up instead of a time for leisure.
Working Outside The Home
I completely understand those of you that work outside the home. Don’t get me wrong. I have absolutely been there myself. Headed home after a long day’s work to cook dinner and fold the laundry as the meat browns. It’s all so much truly, and to do it all is asking too much of one person.
However, even in these trying situations, we can prioritize and manage our homes in a way that allows us to keep up better and settle into our weekends for what they are intended for, rest. I am not implying the entire weekend needs to be rest. It certainly is not and never has been that for me. But I am more talking about having actual time for it.
Instead of looking to these days as days to get our homes back in order. A complete job on its own, why not consider chipping away at it throughout the week? Having designated days for certain jobs or keeping it simple by doing small jobs each day you notice need doing.
If you are a full-time homemaker, this is likely something you are already doing. But if you work part or full-time, it tends to get a little trickier. I work from home full-time, but the mere fact that I am home gives me an advantage that I won’t pretend isn’t there.
Time Constraints
I have been a stay-at-home mom, a full-time outside-home working mom and a business ran from home mom. I have also been single through most of it. So believe me, I understand all the situations one can deal with.
I will say I go back to having a solid homemaking routine, every single time. When you partner this with set days for certain jobs and allow yourself to chip away at the needs of your home little by little. You don’t have to play catch up. You can actually have a weekend that includes rest, even an entire day of it.
Some of you are in disbelief at this concept. But it is true and today I am going to give you a little insight into one of my most important designed days that has become part of my regular homemaking routine. Which is my Friday homemaking routine to be exact. A time when I set us up for a successful weekend when I can look forward to moments of rest.
I hope this post motivates you to find ways to prepare for the weekend so that you too can find time for much-needed rest. Whether or not that includes a Friday homemaking routine.

I can’t say this enough, but I love Fridays. There is a little bit of excitement around here and anticipation for the weekend. Not that anything needs to be scheduled or planned for, but rather the opposite. I look forward to doing what I want to in a day instead of what the calendar might dictate.
I work hard. Very hard all week long, and although it does not necessarily stop on the weekends, it is lighter. Some extra work, work that if I decide to do, it is because I feel like doing it. During the week, work gets done no matter how I feel; it’s the dedication part of me that keeps the consistency going—something every business owner needs.
Friday Cleaning Routine
By Friday’s arrival, I am ready to let my hair down and dive into my home completely. It all starts with the floors for me. Somehow knowing that I have given our floors a good cleaning seems to set the tone for the entire weekend. Not to mention clean floors are a joy in themselves. Shiny and clean, it makes the entire house seem cleaner instantly.
I begin by vacuuming up all the bits of dirt and debris. Since I don’t like to use chemicals in our home, it can be hard to clean the floors as thoroughly as I’d like. But I must tell you that I have found this little steam mop, and it works! All without the use of chemicals. The steam lifts even that gross grime from the corners of my tile. If you have this same issue, I suggest you try one as well.
I am not much of a hack person, but I must say I feel like this is a cheat cleaning of some kind; because one of my greatest secret weapons is using my Roomba to vacuum up the wood floors and rugs for me. It is a big help on floor cleaning day because, by the time I am done with mopping our tile floors, the wood floors are picked up and ready to be mopped.
Friday Dinner
When the floors are finally done, the second part of my Friday homemaking routine is to make something special for dinner. After all, we worked hard, and it is time to celebrate the end of the week, and what better way than a meal? I used to do the regular homemade pizza nights. Which I still love, but lately, I have been letting my daughter pick our Friday dinner.
So at her request, on this particular night, I made Lasagna with Béchamel. One of the tastiest lasagna recipes I have ever tried, and let me tell you, the béchamel makes all the difference in taste. This is also great for reheating later, and I love how one makes two or more meals for us.
Final Thoughts
For as long as I can remember, I have followed this simple Friday homemaking routine often without even realizing it was even a routine, to begin with. Each Friday would come, and I would think, it’s been a week, and the floors need cleaning. The meals that followed were to make Fridays feel special, and although this Friday homemaking routine is about as basic as it can get.
It has been helpful to incorporate it into my weekly habits. This brings me back to the idea of chipping away at homemaking tasks little by little each day of the week. Even if it’s by doing super basic homemaking routines on a Friday, these small habits have a huge impact overall. I hope coming along with me while I shared my Friday homemaking routine was helpful and if nothing else, motivating.
Now, with the floors cleaned, dishes done, and dinner on the table, this Friday homemaking routine of mine is complete.
On that note, it’s time to dive into the weekend.
