This Natural Chest Rub for Congestion and Cough is a great natural alternative to Vicks Vapor rub. It is easy to make and needs just a few ingredients.
Making natural remedies at home is one of the most empowering feelings for a homemaker. Oftentimes, we are stuck headed out the door to the store to grab anything that will bring some sort of relief and we don’t have the time or quite frankly the energy to read what goes into every product.
Having a few ingredients at all times in your home when making your cleaning, home remedies or beauty products is downright genius. Not only can you make cleaning products but you can find natural effective ways to help aid your family in sickness and feel good about what you are using. Essential Oils
This recipe calls for both peppermint and eucalyptus oil both are known to promote clear breathing along with a feeling of open airways. Peppermint oil is often also used to aid in headaches and applied topically to the temples and behind the ear for care.
Lemon essential oil is another great one in this blend as lemon oil promotes clear nasal passages and allows for steady breathing. Lastly, the use of lavender essential oil is a great one to help relax and soothe promoting a sense of calmness. Lavender oil has also been used to help with headaches as well.
Lemon Essential Oil: Lemon Essential oil is known for its cleaning capabilities but lemon oil is also a great oil to use to boost the immune system and help with respiratory function.
Peppermint Essential Oil– Peppermint is a cooling oil that can aid in clear air-breathing and also help reduce the tension of headaches when applied topically.
Eucalyptus Essential Oil- Inhaling eucalyptus can open up the airways and help promote clear air breathing.
Lavender Essential Oil– Lavender oil is a great one for promoting a relaxing feeling in the body and aiding in more restful sleep.
Supplies You Might Need
How to Use
This might seem pretty straightforward but some people really have not grown up using that old Vicks vapor rub. And so to use a chest rub might seem a little strange. To use, open the shirt and dip your fingers into the rub. Apply liberally across the chest. I also rub a little at the tip of our noses to make sure we can breathe it in. But of course, that is optional. You can easily wash it off with a warm damp towel. Allow yourself to breathe in the scents from the essential oils.
Storage and Shelf Life
It’s important to store any natural remedy or product properly. What you store it in and where matters. For this natural chest rub, it is best to use a glass container with a lid. Such as a mason jar. Storing in plastic for long periods can result in toxins from the plastic seeping into the rub. Not something you want.
Keep the natural chest rub in a cool dry place. Such as a hallway closet or bathroom cabinet. The chest rub can last up to 5 months when stored properly. Be sure to do a smell check after storing for long periods. The essential oils can go rancid.
