In our house, we enjoy a good movie night. Cozying up to a great movie and a fun snack is the perfect way to end a long week. Popcorn is traditional of course, however, when I am wanting to make movie night a bit more fun, I make these Delicious Soft Pretzels. They taste just like a soft pretzel should. A tad sweet, and soft inside with that little bit of chewy texture on the outside. They make a great snack with or without a movie. In fact, I have served these for fun easy lunches and yes the kids love this one!

Why You Will Love These Pretzels

  • They are easy to make!
  • This recipe is fun to make with the kids. They love rolling the ropes and being able to help handle the dough.
  • These pretzels use simple ingredients that many of us keep on hand.
  • They have a delicious authentic soft pretzel taste.
  • These pretzels make a great snack, and easy meal and can reheat well to be enjoyed later!

Ingredients

Flour- I use all-purpose for this recipe. It is the perfect type of flour that creates a nice texture for these Delicious Homemade Pretzels.

Sugar- I add just a 1/4 cup plus 1 tsp of white granulated sugar to the pretzel dough. This gives it a touch fo sweetness without it being overly sweet. Just the way a soft pretzel should taste.

Yeast- I suggest using quick dry active yeast for best results as these only sit an hour before baking.

Salt- I like to use sea salt for this recipe. But ordinary table salt will be fine in the dough. However, I do suggest a nice flakey salt to top them with in order to get that true soft pretzel taste and look. I like to use a chunkier sea salt for that or you can use Meldon salt.

Water- The water should be warm but not hot. Between 85℉- 110℉ is the best range for this. Any hotter and you risk killing off the yeast.

Olive Oil- I add 1 tbsp of olive oil to the dough, or you can use vegetable oil for this if you’d like. The oil helps the dough come together.

Butter- I brush the pretzels straight out of the oven before serving. I like to use real butter, salt or unsalted is fine. It gives them a delicious buttery taste!

Baking Soda- When the pretzels are ready to bake, we will dip them in a hot water and baking soda mixture solution just before placing them in the oven.

What You Will Need To Make Them

2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour plus more for dusting the dough board

1 packet quick acting yeast

1/4 cup plus 1 tsp sugar

1 cup warm water (between 85℉-110℉)

2 tbsp melted butter (for topping, optional)

1.5 tsp of olive oil

1 tsp sea salt plus more for topping (I like to use a chunkier salt for topping, like chunky sea salt or Meldon salt.)

1/3 cup baking soda

4 cups hot water

Directions

In a small bowl combine the 1 tsp of sugar, warm water, and yeast. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes to allow the yeast to dissolve.

Baking Notes

  • If the dough is too sticky, you can add a bit more flour to the dough ball.
  • Use a candy thermometer to ensure the warm water you use is not too hot. Anything above 110℉ might kill the yeast.
  • This recipe will make 6 soft pretzels.
  • Use all-purpose flour for best results.

Serving Suggestions

  • These are great to have for a fun lunch, the kids really love them!
  • Make a homemade cheese sauce for dipping them in.
  • Enjoy them sweet by adding a cinnamon and sugar topping.

FAQ

Can I make these gluten-free?

You can! I suggest a great gluten-free flour like King Arthurs’s Gluten-Free all-purpose. Be sure to use an all-purpose with any brand of gluten-free flour you use.

Do these reheat well?

Yes, I pop mine into a toaster oven which helps soften them and also gives them a toasty outside as if they just came out of the oven.
