Making this brings back alot of memories for me. It’s a dish my late husband, absolutely loved and one that was easy enough for me to master early on when learning to cook from scratch.

I have switched it up from time to time with other minced style meats like the more traditional lamb or ground beef. Ground sausage just gives it a more depth of flavor. If and when children aren’t being served this dish, I will break out the hot italian sauage cause I love the spice!

What You’ll Need To Make This Shepard’s Pie with Sausage Recipe:

1 lb italian sausage

4 large potatoes chopped evenly

3 tbsp butter

½ cup milk

3 medium carrots diced

1 white onion

3 stalks of celery

½ cup frozen peas

2 cups chicken stock

3 tbs flour

½ tsp thyme

1 ½ cups shredded mozzerella or jack cheese

Salt & Cracked black pepper to taste

Directions:

In a stock pot begin boiling the potatoes for the mashed potato topping. Once the potatoes are ready to mash add the butter, milk and salt & pepper to taste and mash them. Then set them aside.

In a large skillet begin browning the Italian sausage breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Add the diced carrots, onions, celery and thyme to the Italian sausage. Crack a bit of the pepper to the mix. Stir it around the pan for about 5 minutes or until the veggies have softened.

Add the flour to mixture and stir it to coat the pan contents. Pour 1 cup of the stock in and stir around until it thickens. Once it begins turning into a gravy consistency slowly add the second cup of stock. Add the ½ cup of peas to the mixture. Taste the gravy and add any additional salt or pepper you’d like. Turn the heat off and either top with the mashed potatoes directly in the same pan or transfer the mixture to a casserole dish. Then top with the shredded cheese.

Pop the pan/casserole dish under the broiler for  just a few minutes to let the cheese crust up and melt.

Let it cool a bit and then dive right in.
